Still Life Paintings (Acrylic)
Overview:
As food is a huge part of Asian culture, these still life paintings represent a Chinese American diet, incorporating elements from both Asian and American markets as well as items my parents brought to the states from China.
Mom's Pickled Things:
This painting started with being visually attracted to a pickle jar and wanting to expand the composition to include other containers of pickled and non-pickled things. My mom likes to reuse containers which is shown here as well. For example, a Talenti gelato container holds dried red peppers and a honey jar acts as a vessel for pickling garlic. Lastly, the rose jam and picked sea cucumbers are from the Asian market.
Quarantine Eats:
This shows some items I ate in quarantine such as spicy ramen, fruit, and Lindor truffle chocolate.
Wine Bottles:
This wine rack shows bottles from China, the U.S., and other countries in the world. I included some wine boxes with Chinese characters as well as the mini chipao adorning two of the bottles on the top level.
Peach Jam:
The first still life I painted in my Brooklyn apartment is one of a pair with my roommate as they depict a collection of objects representing us through things of sentimental value and things we consume.
