Still Life Paintings (Oil)

Overview:

No matter how much venturing I do when creating art, I find myself returning to the still life. Focusing on capturing the beauty of what I see is a grounding process. I like finding ways to be creative in how I render the objects with color, texture, and tone.

Squashes (blue):

For this painting, I was thinking about still life paintings from the Dutch Golden Age with the intention of expressing temporality while contrasting nature's wonders and luminous man-made instruments. With the tilting bowl of "Squashes (blue)," I wanted to culminate the repetition of circles with an element of instability to emphasize the moment captured.

Squashes (rose):

This second painting of squashes had a more specific color palette range in mind with an assignment limitation of three base colors. I was especially intrigued by the lower right pumpkin that began rotting throughout the course of the next couple of days.

Boxes:

This composition was predominantly white in coloration, so I wanted to push myself to find different colors created by light and shadow in order to combat the starkness of using white as a base. This was also an effort to be increasingly resourceful as I found myself becoming overly reliant on white to create brightness.
